Set Aside Plenty of Time to Start Up a New Computer

As part of our dedication to be on the cutting edge of technology, we’ve spent the majority of the day booting up a brand new desktop computer.

While laptops are nice and portable, desktops offer stability and can be upgraded. We like to have desktops here that supplement the laptops, if something goes wrong with the more fragile laptop computers, we still have the desktops as backup.

As with any computer, it takes a while to get everything set up. Even if Windows has been installed previously, you still need to add in all the programs that you use. It doesn’t matter if you’re a consumer, business, or small business, it’s still a tricky process.

The easiest way to handle it is to write down a list of all the programs you use. If you’re able, you can look them up and find their websites for download and send them to yourself so that you can easily keep track of which ones you need to download and from where.

If you use an email desktop application, such as Outlook, you need to make sure that you’ve got all your emails and passwords memorized, written down, or sent to yourself. It can quickly become a problem if you need to attach the emails to this program, but you don’t have the passwords and can’t access them.

When you transfer you old files to your computer, you’ll need an external hard drive or CDs/DVDs that you transfer your data to and from. If your old computer starts acting up, it’s a safe bet to go ahead and start transferring things as soon as possible, that way, when it does go kaput, you’ll have most of the stuff saved and you won’t lose many things.

Computers can be difficult to use, but as long as you keep good records of what you need and keep your files safe and in multiple places, you’ll be able to transfer from one to the other with ease.

Brand New Carpeting at Just One Vision!

IMG_20131008_102146

Not so long ago, I posted a blog entry that mentioned the offices at Just One Vision being under construction. That construction has continued on and I’m now pleased to announce that in most areas that were once hardwood floors, we’ve got a gorgeous new blue carpet! It’s plush, cozy, and greatly reduces the echo that once filled the office.

All the employees (and visitors) love the new carpet, it’s a resounding success!

Things are still in a little bit of an uproar as all the furniture is being placed and rearranged, but things continue as they always have been, the desks and chairs were the first to be put back into place.

Sometimes you need to spend a little to take care of your business. The new carpet has made everyone a lot happier and has solved problems, like the echo, that previously existed. Happy employees are much more likely to work better, and everyone is absolutely thrilled with the new carpet.

Visit the official Just One Vision Twitter for a few more pictures of our new carpet!

Learning What Works and What Doesn’t

DragonCon’s had 27 conventions over the years, so they’ve slowly learned how to handle things. Even so, they’re still learning and changing and growing, and so are their attendees.

For example, they’ve streamlined the pre-registration process, people bring in a postcard with a bar code on it. If their postcard never arrived or if they left it at home, they can bring their ID and have their data looked up. After their information is brought up, a label is printed and placed on their badge. It’s a quick and easy process made possible by technology and them learning over the years.

They’ve also made their registration online, to save people a little bit of time when buying their tickets at the convention. They’ve got forms to fill out and the process goes pretty quick once they’re completed.

Every year, after the convention is said and done, they hold a banquet for the volunteers. We’ve heard in years past that the food was iffy, but they’ve started trying different foods and when they find something that works and most people like, they stick with it. They’re still changing it, but over time, they’ll get it right.

This applies to more than just DragonCon, it’s applicable in nearly every business and situation. As time goes on, you listen to your customers and learn what they like and what they don’t and you change things accordingly.

It’s impossible to make everyone happy, though, but if you can find a solution that the majority likes and that you can accommodate, then that’s the way you need to go.

After all, your customers make your business, if they’re not happy and you’re not showing a willingness to change, then they’re going to go elsewhere.

Under Construction – Progress Can be Messy

As you’ve seen on this blog, as we’ve gathered our thoughts, we’ve posted a few things about our products and services. That was a warm-up to the blog you’re reading today, we’ve found our groove and are creating a different sort of blog now.

Sometimes it takes a little mess in order to get where you need to be. Like this blog was in the past, our offices are currently undergoing a little bit of construction. It’s nothing major, mostly a paint job and taking care of a few things. As the offices are being worked on, furniture is being moved around and things are all out of place. But, in the end, they’re going to look a lot better and work better for everyone.

Sometimes you’ve got to completely rearrange things in order to get where you need to be.

If your website goes under some construction or maintenance, let everyone know, but don’t dwell on it too much. Try to do as much as you can before taking any of your site down, as when people lose access, they’ll stop coming, even after you’ve got it fixed up. Leaving up “Under Construction” messages all over your website can pique curiosity, but, at the same time, if they stay up for too long, people will give up on the promised changes ever coming.

There’s nothing wrong with being under construction, but if it drags on, then you’ll drive away your consumers. A little mess can eventually go a long way, but if it stays a mess, then you need to get on cleaning it up, or you could lose some of your consumer base.
